The Power of Telling Yourself a New Story Through God’s Truth

Last year, around my daughter’s senior year of high school, I found myself struggling.

Not just with all the emotions of her graduating — but with me. With my past. With the teenage version of myself I hadn’t fully forgiven. I was constantly on her back, not because she was messing up, but because I didn’t want her to repeat my mistakes.

That season uncovered something I hadn’t fully dealt with:

I was carrying unforgiveness toward myself.

And I had been… for years.

The Trigger That Shifted Everything

One morning while journaling, I felt God whisper something that stopped me in my tracks:

“It’s time to tell yourself a new story.” That hit deep.

Because what we meditate on magnifies. And I was stuck replaying the same story — full of shame, regret, and fear.

God was showing me that if I wanted a new life, I had to stop rehearsing the old one.

Dreaming Without Limits

From that day, I started imagining the life I actually wanted. I looked up core values. I asked myself:

“Who do I want to become — not based on my past, but on who God says I am?”

I started looking at scriptures of what God says about me.

One of my favorite scriptures is Psalm 139

I started dreaming with no limits. Now I'm working towards the dreams in my heart without thinking I'm not qualified because of my mistakes.

I stopped obsessing over my past failures and started reflecting on everything I’ve overcome. I started feeling more content and grateful that God chose me. I wrote it all down. I crafted a declaration — my new story.

Now, on my morning walks, I read that story aloud. And just last week, I recorded it on a voice memo so I can listen to it every day.

What Story Are

You

Telling Yourself?

Let’s get real.

  • Are you still playing the same old, sad story?

  • Still holding yourself hostage to your past?

  • Still believing lies that were never from God?

Common Lies We Tell Ourselves

Let me call out some of the lies that keep too many of us stuck:

  • I don’t matter.

  • I’m too old.

  • I’m not qualified.

  • No one will listen to me.

  • I’m too busy.

  • I’m a failure.

  • I’m not good enough.

  • I’m a bad mom/dad.

  • I’m terrible with money.

  • That could never work for me.

  • I’ve done to much and God won’t forgive me.

Let me ask you:

Would you say these things to someone you love?

No?

Then stop saying them to yourself.

It’s not always easy. Think about how long you’ve believed the same lies. For me it’s been 20+ years of my life. So please give yourself time and grace to start fully believing and living your new story.

Replace the Lies with God’s Truth

Here’s what you need to start telling yourself — today, tomorrow, and every single day after:

  1. God is holding me together every single day.

  2. I am God’s masterpiece — His intentional, beautiful work of art.

  3. I am fully forgiven and free from condemnation.

  4. I am an overcomer

  5. My past is not beyond God’s power to redeem.

  6. My future doesn’t catch God off guard.

  7. God goes before me and walks beside me. I am never alone.

Begin with Prayer

Start in prayer- Write down the lies you’ve been believing about yourself and take them to GOD in prayer. Tell him you’ve been struggling and ask him to allow you to see yourself the way he sees you.

As you pray, you might say:

  • "Lord, I confess the false beliefs I've held about myself."

  • "Help me to see myself as You see me, beloved and cherished."

  • "Guide me in overcoming these struggles and embracing my true identity."

Allow this time to be a moment of reflection and renewal, seeking to align your thoughts with His truth.

Next, go to the word of GOD and get scriptures that align with what He says about you (use Google if you need to).

Write them out and look up core values, and think about the type of person you

want to become? Dream with not limits.

Now start the process of writing your new story

You Are Becoming

You are not your past.

You are not your failures.

You are not what happened to you.

change your perspective from victim to victories

You are becoming — and becoming again takes grace, truth, and time.

So today, friend, tell yourself a new story.

Not the one fear wrote.

Not the one shame keeps replaying.

But the one God is still writing — full of redemption, power, peace, and limitless purpose.
